Happy Halloween from Room 113!

Happy Halloween from our creepy class! Wishing everyone a safe and fun trick or treating night. Hopefully the rain stays away!

Despite the high levels of energy in our classroom today, we kept working hard and enjoyed some spooooooky writing and some fun Halloween math games!

Weekly Words

Our weekly words for the week of Oct 28-Nov 1

French:  sound "au" in French - makes an "oh" sound
English: High frequency words, numbers 1-10

Click below for ways to help your child practise their weekly words at home:

C'est l'Halloween

The students are extremely excited about the ever-approaching Halloween festivities. In music class, we learned "C'est l'Halloween" by Max Maxwell and put actions to it. Watch these faces for excellent expression!

This video is posted as "unlisted" so only those with the link can view it. Enjoy!

In French class, we have been learning lots of French Halloween words - here are a few to try using at home:

Researchers At Work

Our class is in full research mode,  collecting information on their chosen animal. We have been learning things like how to use a search engine to find good websites and how to gather specific information about animal habitats, appearance, diet, classification as well as information about threats their animal may be facing currently. Our next step is to start translating some of our research in order to put together a short French presentation.

Keep up the great work, grade twos!

French Music Video

We worked very hard on learning the lyrics for "Sur Ma Route" by Kids United and are pleased to finally be able to share our class music video!

This video is "unlisted" on YouTube which means that only those with the link (via the blog) can view. We hope you enjoy our singing and choreography!

Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving weekend, families!

I hope that this weekend gives you all the opportunity to rest, refuel and reconnect with family members. This week in our classroom, we have reflected on the things we are thankful for at home and school.

We've been taking some time each morning to check-in about how we are feeling and students have been openly sharing the things they are looking forward to, worried about and wondering. It's been a really nice way to get to know each other even more and many shared today that they were looking forward to spending time with their families this weekend.

Doubles!

We've been practising our doubles using a fun "Double Mint Rap."

Below are the lyrics so your child can practise at home. Having fluency with the doubles facts helps greatly when adding larger numbers.

Students can use their knowledge of doubles to help them with "near doubles" and other related facts.
Ex. When adding 8+7, using the anchor of 7+7=14 and adding one more, becomes an easy fact to solve quickly and accurately.

Shakes Those Beans

We have been doing a lot of "Number Talks" in our classroom and discussing how every number contains smaller numbers within in. In this fun game, students try to get four in a row on their board. Each game has a different number at the top and the students are given that number of double sided beans (counters). They shake them and then dump them and see what addition sentences they can make and then strategize about where to mark their board.

Example:

In this picture, we can see 7 beans. 5 red and 2 blue. The student can then choose to either colour in t
5+2   or   2+5

This helps reinforce the idea of part-part-whole and that there are many different ways to create a single number.

Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Oh, The Places You'll Go! Meet the Grade Two explorers of room 113.

We did some initial writing about what we hope to accomplish this year in grade two along with some hot air balloon art. Here are our very own grade two explorers, ready to tackle a new year and go up, up and away on many adventures in grade two.
