We have been doing a lot of "Number Talks" in our classroom and discussing how every number contains smaller numbers within in. In this fun game, students try to get four in a row on their board. Each game has a different number at the top and the students are given that number of double sided beans (counters). They shake them and then dump them and see what addition sentences they can make and then strategize about where to mark their board.
Example:
In this picture, we can see 7 beans. 5 red and 2 blue. The student can then choose to either colour in t
5+2 or 2+5
This helps reinforce the idea of part-part-whole and that there are many different ways to create a single number.
